Part 3 from our recent franchise webinar featuring Nick Strong of Select Your Franchise. In this episode Nick addresses the question ‘Is a franchise right for me?’. Excerpt: "The great news is for anyone that’s thinking about managing that risk and thinking about going into franchising, is that consistently over the years, the NatWest and British Franchise Association national survey has revealed that over 90% of people that run franchises, the franchisees, actually run profitable businesses. So that’s one of the key reasons why the banks are so interested in franchising because there’s such high levels of success for those that take on and run a franchise business." While there is no “cure” for Dyslexia, the disability is one that is finally easy to recognize, and therefore, easier to overcome. Teachers are more aware of symptoms, and parents can finally rest assured that there are ways to teach their children English so that they can enjoy full, well-rounded lives.
The first thing to understand about Dyslexia in order to know how to teach a dyslexic student is that children may experience problems with visual or auditory sensations. Therefore, the best way for the child to learn English is by involving more of the child’s other senses while learning through touch and movement. This is known as multi-sensory learning. The way multi-sensory learning can work is by making learning projects practical and enjoyable.
What are some ways to do this? There are plenty. Here are only a few:
1. Use acronyms – These, along with funny sentences, rhyming sentences or sentences that bring a silly visual to one’s mind are great ways to improve the memory of grammatical rules, spelling, and other language difficulties. 2. Use Role-playing – Acting and miming make learning fun, as do other non-competitive games like spelling bingo, matching games, and puzzles. When children use these forms of learning, they learn a lot based on context, which makes what they learn much easier to remember. 3. Use color-coding – For both grammatical structures and spelling, color-coding can be used for flash cards, vocabulary sheets, or grammar sheets. This is a great way for children to distinguish separate ideas. 4. Use the body – When learning to spell, children can “draw” the letters in the air. When learning new vocabulary, practicing the spelling this way is good for motion memory. 5. Use illustrations – Using pictures and illustrations is an important method of teaching dyslexic children as text is the most difficult medium for them. 6. Use flashcards – Having students seeing the words with the pictures is a great tool for memorization. These are only a few ideas to help anyone teaching dyslexic children. It may also be important to note that these children also have difficulty reading black on white.

First time business owners go through a difficult time when deciding on where to invest their hard earned money. One good choice of a business investment is buying a franchise. Franchises can be considerably safer than other business models and it is easy for investors to take control of them. There is one main problem that plagues investors and that is choosing the right franchise opportunities. The following are some considerations to make when deciding on a franchise to buy.
Demand for Products Offered by the Franchise
A potential franchise buyer must think about the profitability of the selected franchise. The level of demand for the products offered by the franchise is an important indicator of how well the business is performing. One big advantage of franchises is that the business has already been established.
The demand for its products is therefore easier to calculate. It is also easier to predict future changes. The ideal franchise to buy should be one whose products have a consistent demand and one that is not affected by seasonal fluctuations.
The Competition
The market in which a franchise operates should be carefully analyzed. An investor should look for better franchise opportunities if the chosen franchise operates in a market with stiff competition. This can of course be overlooked if the franchise has attractive profits and a big base of loyal customers. A lot of competition forces companies to reduce prices in order to get bigger market shares. An investor should decide whether the profit margin of a given franchise is acceptable.
Amount of Investment Required
When buying franchises, most investors will be required to give an initial investment and then pledge a certain amount of future profits. Investors must therefore consider if the amounts involved are acceptable before going ahead to buy the franchise. Sometimes it is possible to negotiate for a reduction of initial investment and increasing pledge of future profits if an investor does not have enough capital.
Business Experience
Sometimes investors move too fast and seize franchise opportunities without thinking of the amount of experience they have in the industry. What they may not realize is that even if they bought a profitable franchise, they have to be able to conduct business in the industry in order to keep up the profitability. Investors should therefore make sure that they completely understand how to carry out business in the industry before buying the franchise. It makes more sense for a person who has been in a certain industry to buy a franchise that operates in the industry.
Training is an option for people wishing to buy a franchise in an industry they don’t fully understand. The investors might get enough training and run the franchise considerably well. They will however have to work in the business for a long time to match the effectiveness of people who have had years of experience in the industry. Franchises are relatively safe business investments and are by far the best option for new business owners. They are a good way of entering the self-employment scene without risking the loss of a person’s life-long savings.

Franchising is one with the most recent trends to hit the business scene. With people looking for a fast and automatic business, most often opt to acquire franchises. This provides them with the opportunity to start a business with an existing identity, reliability, and supporters. Moreover, franchises are provided the promotion streamers, leaflets, resources, equipment, and other fundamentals. For the franchisor’s part, services and products are introduced into a new location without having to shell out money for extra expenses.
These days, franchise companies have been shown to yield significant incomes, which has only increased its popularity among new business owners as well as seasoned ones as well. For the most part, consumers who wish to purchase franchises consider two major points: profitability and growth. For example, McDonald’s and Starbucks are among the most-franchised companies in the country as well as in the world, and even clothing lines have franchises now.
Nonetheless, the franchise scene can be quite difficult to maneuver, and it also requires significant cash outlay, always a consideration when funding a small business, or indeed, any kind of business. There are franchising fees to consider, as well as extensive research to do to make sure your franchise will definitely go over well in the local area. A key to establishing a franchise business is the pinpointing of the right target market as well as the most strategic location. Many franchisors generally opt to rent mall space due to the huge amount of potential consumers passing by every day. As with all other companies, expenses include utility bills, payroll, materials or ingredients, and other operational costs; these exist even in franchises. Needless to say, having enough money can help make your franchising dream come true.
Financing firms offer fast enterprise loans, which help speed up the establishment and growth of businesses. All businesses need money to jumpstart it, and lenders provide a variety of loan products to help companies grow. In the past, lenders thought small businesses were pretty risky. But now, they have recognized the importance of small and medium enterprises. Most banking firms now offer franchise loans without having people go through a lengthy process, and easy-to-meet requirements. But it doesn’t matter if you have long lines to go through or a quick process to breeze through; what matters is that you’re taking the major step to finally obtain the capital you need to fuel your new enterprise.

MUSCAT — Franchising as a Viable Business was the central theme of a panel discussion organised by the Muscat American Business Council (MABC) and McDonald’s Oman at the Sultan Qaboos University. In attendance were a number of students from the SQU College of Commerce and Economics eager to realise their aspirations as the future entrepreneurs of Oman, by learning from well-established Omani franchisees.
“The purpose of the seminar is to bring together the stakeholders, mentors, government and the youth under one roof and talk about franchising as a driving force for SME development in Oman,” said Carol Moss, MABC Board Member in her opening remarks.
The forum highlighted franchising as an exciting business model for first time entrepreneurs. Sharing his own experiences as a successful franchisee, Ali K Daud, development licensee and president of McDonald’s Oman, said: “Franchising is a powerful and effective way of building successful Entrepreneurship and SMEs.
A good franchise provides training, mentorship and proven systems to operate a successful business. Especially for first timers, Franchising reduces risk, shortens the learning curve and
provides an environment where you are not on your own.
This also mitigates risk for the lenders, making it easier for the franchisee to secure funding.
“We also wanted to dispel the myth that franchises always need a lot of money to get started or you have to be a large company. There are a lot of franchises out there, in the US particularly, that really don’t need big capital. They can be as small as a one or two-man show to begin with. For example, a fumigator, plumber, electrician, carpet cleaner, etc.
My advice to the youth of Oman who are looking to obtain a franchise is to focus on the services sector; and my advice to the government would be to bring on board expertise to run SME strategy from countries that have done it successfully, and not to try and reinvent the wheel.”
Also sharing his thoughts on franchisee-style businesses was Rahwan al Murazza, local franchisee of Ziebert automotive services. He said: “One of the advantages of franchising is that one doesn’t have to be a mechanic to acquire the Ziebert franchise. I’m not a mechanic myself and I don’t have that particular experience to run an automotive business.
“But as a proven formula, franchising gives you access to the complete business system from A to Z, thereby enabling you to run it as your own business.”
Sami Daud, director of Gourmet Gulf and Retail Arabia with GCC wide master franchises for brands such as Yo Sushi, California Pizza Kitchen (CPK), Gourmet Burger Kitchen, Morelli’s Ice Cream, Pink Berry India, Hamleys Toy Stores and House of Fraser Department Stores, among others said: “There are lots of franchisers that would prefer to franchise to smaller companies or individuals than to very large companies. They prefer to do this because it ensures that their brand has undiluted focus of the franchisee. But like any business, hard work, commitment and self-involvement are key to success”.
Salah al Maawali, Director-General for SMEs at the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, applauded MABC’s initiative in organising the Panel Discussion. “I hope through this kind of a platform, we are able to encourage young minds to take up franchises as a viable business option and in the process help build more entrepreneurs in order to have a more stable community.”
Dhafir Awadh al Shanfari, HoD at the SQU Department of Management College of Commerce and Economics, commented: “The forum was targeted at graduating students with the aim of getting them to consider franchising as a serious self-employment option once they graduate. The students not only heard real-life examples of successful Omani franchisees, but also received an overview of the government’s procedures for setting up SMEs.
“Events of this nature are a wonderful platform for the exchange of experiences and transfer of knowledge from successful Omani businesspersons to aspiring entrepreneurs. As the forum has vividly demonstrated, it’s not necessary to have millions of rials to own a franchise. As a business model, franchising offers opportunities for entrepreneurship and SME development.”
Abdullah al Mukhaini, a student of SQU’s College of Commerce, stated: “The seminar provided us with valuable insights and gave us a great deal of inspiration and motivation.”
Maimunah Shabani, one of the attendants of the seminar also said: “The seminar was very well structured, informative, interactive and well presented. I came to the seminar not knowing what to expect but was pleasantly surprised with the discussions and the panel members. “My mind is gearing up as ideas for future businesses are slowly nurturing. Franchising does bring much brighter business opportunities.”

The one area that Franchises do very well is promote there business. They will show you countless reasons why you should Invest in there Franchise over the competition.
But what many people don,t do is enough due diligence before singning on the dotted line and handing over there hard earned cash. In selecting a Franchise people need to ask themselves these 7 vital questions before committing to a life long decision.
1.What am I passionate about in life and is this business something that I want to spend 14 hours a day doing. As the owner you will have a very responsible position and if something goes wrong and it will, guess who is responsible?
2.If I have to be away from my Family is this Franchise opportunity going to be worth it when I want to sell or can my Family work with me?
3.Is this Franchise a Nationally known Brand and will it still be in demand when I am ready to sell in 5 to 10 years.
4.Am I buying myself a Job and could I work for Corporate America for the same amount of money and a lot less hassles?
5.Can I start this business Part Time and work from home and eventually work into a full time business and learn at my own pace.
6.How do I really Handle stress, because no matter what you think or how positive you are there will always be unforeseen challenges that come up at the worst possible time.
7.I left this last and most important Question till the end. “Staff” are so important for your success that many people tend to overlook this, because not everyone will work as hard as you do on your business and who will be there when you are sick or want to go on vacation.
In summary if you are at all questioning even one of these seven areas then you have to take a step back and consider other options.
